Description
Hedychium Gardnerianum is scented and would be a great addition to any garden. A truly magnificent plant Hedychium Gardnerianum has flower spikes growing up to 35cm long. The flowers are a Lemon yellow with a red filament. In some places they are hardy but it is best to protect them well against winter frosts if leaving out. The foliage of hedychium also adds to the impact it will make in the garden.
If planting in containers ensure they are regularly watered and fed during the growing season. They may take a year or so to establish.
Cultivation instruction
Plant Indoors: Plant in a good quality indoor compost ensuring they have plenty of drainage. Can be planted anytime from February on-wards. Keep soils moist but do not over water.
Plant outside: They prefer a rich well-drained soil. In heavy soils, just add grit and sand to lighten it up. Cultivate soils to a depth of 20cms and add some well rotted manure or granular fertiliser to the soil when cultivating. Plant them 10-15cms below the soil surface. Cover with soil and firm around the bulbs to keep them in place. Leave to establish for a few years and protect from winter frosts by covering them in a couple of inches of mulch over winter.
Care Tips:
Will take a year or so to get established, the key is to grow them in a sunny border.
Ideal foods are Tomato feed and liquid seaweed
For the best results ensure soils do not dry out in the first year whilst they are establishing.
Plant with late summer flowering lilies and or Dahlias for a mass of colour in the summer.
