Description

Gladiolus communis ssp. byzantinus – true form grown for us in the UK on the Isles of Scilly. A similar cultivated form is available but the flowers are not as deep purple/red as these and in our opinion do not last as long.

This cultivar has been awarded an AGM (Award of Garden Merit) by the RHS.

Cultivation Instructions

These bulbs are excellent for naturalising and as such will come back for many years. Ensure that they are planted in soil that has been cultivated to a depth of 25cms and is free draining. They are happy in shade and sun although in the sunnier areas the flowers will not last quite so long.

Food such as well rooted compost or bone meal should be available during the leaf and flower stage. This will ensure there is sufficient nutrition for them to produce flowers for the following spring. Grow in containers if required however do not use too much multi purpose compost in the pot. Gladiolus communis ssp byzantinus work really well with the shorter alliums and camassia.
