Prepared/Indoor Hyacinth Jan Bos is a fantastic carmine red with flowers carried above the foliage. It is named after the Dutch Olympic speed skater and cyclist. Hyacinth are one of the most popular bulbs for indoor flowers and if planted in early September they will flower in time for Christmas making them ideal to give as a gift or just bring some fragrance and colour to the house in the winter. When using compost it is suggested that bulb fibre is better than compost although why not try growing them in hyacinth glasses as this just uses water. After planting put in a dark place for approx 10-12 weeks then bring them inside to bring on the fantastic blooms – pots with drainage can be put outside and covered with 3-4″ of compost. The bulbs can then be brought indoors in early December when the tips of the flowers are 1.5-2cms above the neck of the bulb.
