First registered in 1954 this very showy variety is a superb garden variety. The flowers are red flamed white and ideal for cut flower.
Parrot tulips are very showy with fascinating petals and bold colours that are also often associated with parrots, hence their name. Grows well in free draining soils and also happy in some dappled shade. Parrot tulips make very good cut-flowers and the blooms will last quite a while in the vase. They can of course also be used in tubs, pots and containers and put to great effect if planted in groups of 10 or more. When planting ensure the soil is cultivated to a depth of 20cms if possible and the soil is free draining, in the heavier soils add grit and rotted humus material to give extra drainage. Plant the tulips with the pointed end upwards at a depth of 15cms and 10cms apart. It is traditional to plant tulips in October when the ground starts to cool down. If this is a concern do not worry if you plant them earlier or later as they will still grow well. Tulips do benefit from using bulb starter when first planting.
